Annual Mena Singer Presidents’ Day Cup

Our annual Presidents’ Day Cup Hockey Game is our capstone in-person fundraising event. The game has been an exciting way to raise awareness about breast cancer in our community as well as a great opportunity to bring people together. It has served as both a rivalry game against brothers as well as a memorial game for their late mother. Each year, more than thirty participants and over a hundred spectators gather together for the game and subsequent reception.

Gathering.

Shortly after Mena’s passing in 2015, her two sons were joined by some of their closest family and friends for a refreshing game of pickup hockey at a local ice rink. After the game, the group went out for a meal and shared some memories. It was then that they realized they should channel that energy into a positive cause.

Channeling.

The following year, the group agreed to meet once again for a more formal event. This time the game was announced on social media and all who were interested were invited to join. The support was overwhelming and with the help of volunteers and donors, the group was able to send a respectable donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Adapting.

After five successful fundraising events, the group decided to shift their energy to a more active mission and the Mena Singer Foundation was formed. While they recognize the importance of raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research, they feel our unique situation lends itself more toward a role of benevolence directly in the community.
