Mena Singer Foundation Holds Fundraiser and Charity Hockey Game vs. FDNY

October 2023

The Mena Singer Foundation was doing its thing again last Friday night during Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Abe Stark Rink in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

On Friday, the Singer Foundation hockey squad took the ice against the FDNY Bravest hockey squad.

Nick Singer reports the event raised north of $6,000 in support of hockey families battling breast cancer with a subsequent auction of the FDNY jerseys through MeiGray to benefit the Ray Pfeifer Foundation, an organization that assists September 11th first responders with medical needs not covered by insurance.

“The night drew a crowd of almost 200 people despite the tough weather with several local businesses chipping in to help out -- namely Marc Dolce Photography, Andrea Marie Photography and Little Italy Gourmet,” said Nick Singer.

Richard LaGrua, Major, 1st Special Operations Wing, USAF

After four deployments and over 1500 combat hours flying with his Mena bracelet over Aghanistan, Iraq, Somali, and Kenya on hundreds of missions, Rich dedicated his bracelet and the American Flag from his most recent, and likely last active duty, deployment to the Mena Singer Foundation. Spoken in his words: “Like this flag, Mena’s life represents a warm light shining in the dark and cold.”

Received by the Singer family on behalf of the Foundation, this token will serve as a reminder that you never know whose life you may impact just by being that shining light in the darkness.

Oswego State Pink the Rink

January 2022

We were honored to partner with the Oswego State ACHA D1 Hockey team for their Pink the Rink game against Lawrence Tech. Coach Travis Hyde and his crew hosted a very impressive event honoring us with both a gracious donation as well as participation in the Ceremonial Puck Drop.

We’re looking forward to a bright future as great friends as we continue to recognize the importance of breast cancer awareness as more than just a 31 day period in October.

“We've created this special, limited edition beer glass to raise awareness and help families impacted by breast cancer. We will donate 100% of all profits to @menasingerfoundation, a local non-profit.”

Run, don’t walk, to Alternate Ending Beer Co. to pick up one of these limited edition breast cancer awareness glasses. The great people over there have supported us since before they even opened their doors for business and have chosen to support us further with the proceeds from this beautiful piece of glassware. Trust us; this glass will make a wonderful addition to your home bar while also supporting a great cause. Make sure to stop in for a bite and a beverage while you’re there and tell them who sent ya!

Hockey with a Cause

Nick Singer knows that hockey can be more than just a sport.

That’s why he founded the Mena Singer Foundation, an organization dedicated to keeping hockey players affected by breast cancer playing the game as long as they want to. The organization offers the financial and emotional support many athletes need as a loved one battles the disease.

“Coming from a hockey family, we know that your hockey team is your second family,” Singer said. “It’s more than just an outlet, hockey can be an escape, but also it's your support network. We want to make sure that nobody gets bounced out of the sport.”

This October, Singer is hoping to raise awareness of his foundation in order to broaden their reach and effectiveness. They are accepting donations via their website, as they always are, as well as on Facebook for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

However, Singer pointed out that helping those affected by this disease is not a 31-day endeavour for them. They hosted their flagship Breast Cancer Awareness game this past February.

“The point that we try to drive home is that breast cancer awareness should last more than a month anyway.”

The Breast Cancer

Research Foundation

February 28, 2018

After losing his mother to breast cancer three years ago, Nick decided to support research in her honor. An avid hockey player, Nick and his siblings combined their passion for the sport with their desire to raise funds for BCRF. Now in it’s third year "Mena Singer's President's Day Cup" has raised over $8,500 for BCRF fueling 170 lab hours. Join us in cheering Nick and his team on!

“My mother, Filomena Singer, was one of the most charismatic people in the world. Her smile could light up a room and her energy could be felt whenever she was around. She loved the game of hockey and was always happiest surrounded by our family and friends watching her sons play the sport. We hope that the money we raise can keep somebody else’s mother in the bleachers to watch them play hockey for years to come. ” – Nick Singer

Oppenheimer Trader, Host a Commemorative Hockey Game to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness Nick Singer, Senior Director, Taxable Fixed Income Trading, along with his family, have organized a charitable hockey event to raise funds and awareness in the fight against Breast Cancer. Nick along with his brother, organized this event through word-of-mouth, with the idea that each Singer brother will lead their competitive team. Nick’s team was joined by Oppenheimer employees, Chris Padula and Joe Balzano of our Florham Park office, plus John’s son, Nick Benedetto.

An audience of over 200 supporters, including some Oppenheimer fans who came to witness what had turned into an exciting overtime game and raised funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
