Foundation Holds Fundraiser and Charity Hockey Game vs. FDNY October 2023 The Mena Singer Foundation was doing its thing again last Friday night during Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Abe Stark Rink in Coney Island, Brooklyn. On Friday, the Singer Foundation hockey squad took the ice against the FDNY Bravest hockey squad. That’s why he founded the Mena Singer Foundation, an organization dedicated to keeping hockey players affected by breast cancer playing the game as long as they want to. The organization offers the financial and emotional support many athletes need as a loved one battles the disease. “Coming from a hockey family, we know that your hockey team is your second family,” Singer said. “It’s more than just an outlet, hockey can be an escape, but also it's your support network. We want to make sure that nobody gets bounced out of the sport.” This October, Singer is hoping to raise awareness of his foundation in order to broaden their reach and effectiveness. They are accepting donations via their website, as they always are, as well as on Facebook for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. However, Singer pointed out that helping those affected by this disease is not a 31-day endeavour for them. This memorial event was held in honor of his mother who lost her battle with cancer in 2015. This February, on its record coldest day of the year, the first “Mena Singer Breast Cancer Awareness - Presidents’ Day Cup” tournament took to the ice. Nick along with his brother, organized this event through word-of-mouth, with the idea that each Singer brother will lead their competitive team. Nick’s team was joined by Oppenheimer employees, Chris Padula and Joe Balzano of our Florham Park office, plus John’s son, Nick Benedetto. An audience of over 200 supporters, including some Oppenheimer fans who came to witness what had turned into an exciting overtime game and raised funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Before returning to the northeast, Justine and her family spent about a decade living in Georgia where Justine was a part of the Gwinnet County School System. There, she became a member of the Creekland Middle School’s Relay for Life- American Cancer Society team and spent time fundraising for the Collins High School Drama Club. Justine has kept her fundraising skills sharp by actively organizing fundraising activities in her local community. As the Director of Events for Civic Hall, a NYC nonprofit that uses the advancement of technology for the public good, Alena became involved with local organizations in helping them execute successful events. After a successful high school varsity hockey career, Joe brought his talents to a local utility where he maintains the role of Operations Trainer. When Joe isn’t wearing one of his many hobby hats or working, you can find him coaching Little League baseball for his township in central New Jersey where he lives with his family and dog, Murray.
